West Virginia TVRJ Daily Incarcerations under Scrutiny: Uncovering the Alarming Trends
The vast majority of prisoners entering jail in West Virginia are repeatedly incarcerated for low-level, non-violent offenses, and are held in overcrowded facilities lacking basic necessities. These inmates are largely Black and Latino, confined after conviction for non-violent crimes in not-probation violators. As the state's incarceration rates continue to rise dramatically, so do the long-term consequences for these individuals. According to West Virginia's corrections officials, a critical transformation in policies could be just around the corner for reducing TVRJ's reliance on locally managed incarceration, just to name one step towards these State-run facilities being rumored to be one ray of hope for freedom for some nonviolent crimes offenders.
